London will be honoring Bollywood by holding it’s very first rare memorabilia auction in London. In celebration of 100 years of Indian Cinema, a British auction house is selling items with the proceeds going to a great charity. The proceeds from 2 of the 150 items, along with a percentage of all sales, will be going towards British charity Pratham UK that aims to up the literacy level of India’s millions of impoverished children.
The auction will take place on Friday at the Westbury Hotel in Mayfair and reflects increased British, as well as global, interest in Bollywood and Indian cinema in general. 2013 is shaping up as a banner year both in domestic and global box office receipts with records seemingly shattered whenever a new film is released. University of London senior lecturer Anna Morcom noted “Since the 1990s, Bollywood has gone global on a new level, embraced enthusiastically by the Indian diaspora and through them has gained a presence in the mainstream of U.S. and U.K. culture.”
Even Saif Ali Khan has chimed in on the rise of Indian cinema globally, saying “My best investment is to join Bollywood. It’s such a good investment. The business is doubling. When we started, things were not the same. It’s a great time now for the filmmakers and actors.” Saif’s first appeared in a Bollywood movie back in 1992′s film ‘Parampara‘ and has gone on to become one of the many Khans that dominate the industry, the other three being icons Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Bollywood’s most successful film to date is ‘3 Idiots‘, which grossed $60 million total worldwide, but that mark is sure to fall soon with production values, story lines, and distribution continuing to increase along with foreign investment in Indian films.
The 3 Khans: Aamir, Salman, and Shah Rukh Khan
Valuable items include posters from such seminal Bollywood films as 1960′s ‘Mughal-e-Azam‘ and 1975 Amitabh Bachchan action starrer ‘Sholay‘, among other items. Conferro Auctions director Sharan Seth voiced the attitudes of many Brits when saying ‘With Bollywood such an ingrained part of our cultural identity and the timely centenary of Indian cinema, our first auction reflects India’s rich and vibrant history and artistic practices.’
Hooray for Bollywood!!

It’s a Happy Thanksgiving indeed for Bollywood star Deepika Padukone as she has topped the list as the highest earning Bollywood actress of 2013. With films like ‘Race 2′, ‘Chennai Express‘, and most recently ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela‘ becoming mega-hits at the box-office, 2013 has been the best year to date for Deepika. The actress made her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 2007 hit ‘Om Shanti Om‘ and hasn’t looked back since! With this kind of success she has been able to command one of the highest salaries for an actress in Bollywood and recently made over $1.6 million for ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela‘, co-starring Ranveer Singh, alone.
Rounding out the list are Katrina Kaif at #2, Priyanka Chopra at #3, Kareena Kapoor Khan at #4, and Bipasha Basu at #5. 2014 should be an interested year, especially as Priyanka Chopra is attempting to make inroads into the American market through musical ventures and as the face of Guess Jeans. Will Deepika be able to retain her crown as the highest paid actress on the Bollywood in 2014 or will someone on this list steal her throne? Only time will tell, but with each of these actresses has many projects line up for the next year so 2014 will surely shape up to be one of the best years for Bollywood ever!

Actor Saif Ali Khan has expressed his disinterest in kissing scenes in Bollywood movies.
The 43-year-old who has locked-lips on-screen in films “Hum Tum” and “Salaam Namaste,” says that Indian films can do without love scenes because it doesn’t “suit” them. He made this statement during an interview when asked about his views on a comment Kareena Kapoor had made before their marriage. The actress had said that the couple had made a commitment not to do on-screen kissing scenes anymore. When asked, the actor responded: “No. I wouldn’t even say that’s in place. I don’t think it’s a function of being in a relationship. I have done films like ‘Salaam Namaste’ a long time ago. In India, it is not required in our films to have kissing scenes. I don’t think it’s required to be overly sexual. It doesn’t suit us.”
He continued to say that his current wife Kareena has also smooched in a few movies and that “it doesn’t work on-screen.”
“Nobody looks comfortable doing it. And slowly, slowly reports filter through that when somebody has tried to be a little risque, that people don’t seem to like it. I think the kind of cinema we have, we are a hypocritical culture. You can talk about things, you can see Hollywood movies, but if a kiss or a lovemaking scene is presented in a way that doesn’t make you uncomfortable, it’s much easier for everybody to watch,” the actor told TV host Anupama Chopra.
Saif feels really strongly about no on-screen kissing. Could it be that he doesn’t want Kareena making out with other male actors? Is this some possessive behavior leaking through the superstar facade? Guess we will have to wait and see if the newly weds live up to their promise.

It looks like Hrithik Roshan has overtaken Shah Rukh Khan in one important category, the all-time Indian domestic box-office record as his latest film continues to topple box-office records. ‘Krrish 3‘ has passed SRK’s latest film ‘Chennai Express‘ with a robust $36.3 million domestic box-office take compared to the $36.1 million that ‘Chennai Express‘ generated.
The third installment in Hrithik’s super-hero franchise was once again directed by his father Rakesh Roshan and featured Priyanka Chopra and Vivek Oberoi, among others. Despite the success of the film, ‘Chennai Express‘ still made more money overall as it made $19 million overseas compared to the $6.2 million that ‘Krrish 3‘ took in. If you’re looking for the most successful Bollywood movie of all-time, however, you’ll have to look past dashing superheroes or SRK’s action capers to a comedy. That’s right, Aamir Khan‘s 2009 film ‘3 Idiots‘ still holds the title as the most successful Bollywood movie of all time with over $60 million in box-office receipts.
Look to Aamir Khan to try and break his own record with his latest film (and the third installment of another trilogy) ‘Dhoom 3‘, which is set to be released on December 20th. Aamir plays alongside Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, and Uday Chopra in the action-thriller that is set in Chicago this time around. ‘Dhoom 3‘ is the first Indian film to by played in the IMAX format and hits theaters around the Christmas holiday season.

Confused yet? In some exciting news on the television front, critically acclaimed writer/director/actor/producer (talented, huh?) Shekhar Kapur is teaming up with ‘Prison Break‘ creator Paul Scheuring to put together a series on cable network FX based on the infamous mystic/charlatan Grigori Rasputin as we near the 400th anniversary of the Russian Romanov Dynasty. The series will be based on the upcoming book ‘Rasputin: Dark Forces And The Fall of The Romanovs‘ by novelist Douglas Smith.
This isn’t Shekhar’s first brush with history as he first broke through to international prominence with his 1994 Hindi-language film ‘Bandit Queen‘ about the exploits of robber turned politician Phoolan Devi. He followed that up by directing Cate Blanchett to her first Oscar as Queen Elizabeth I in the historical drama ‘Elizabeth‘, which garnered 7 Oscar nominations total.
It’s clear what drew Shekhar to the enigmatic character of Rasputin . The peasant turned faith healer was very influential in the tragic last years of the Romanov dynasty as the Russian aristocracy was increasingly fascinated by mysticism in the early 1900′s. Rasputin could supposedly cure people with prayer, but his most impressive trick may have been his will to live as he almost survived a slew of assassination attempts (including being poisoned, shot three times, and clubbed all in one one night!) before meeting his doom in the frosty Malaya Nevka River.
Shekhar is keeping himself busy with Indian projects as well and is currently acting in Tamil spy thriller ‘Visharoopam 2‘ as well as setting up the 2015 sci-fi thriller ‘Paani‘ starring Sushant Singh Rajput with Aditya Chopra and ‘Slumdog Millionarie‘s Danny Boyle producing and A.R. Rahman providing the soundtrack.

It seems even the biggest names in Bollywood get starstruck when placed in front of Hollywood’s A-listers.
A dazed Ranbir Kapoor greeted Robert De Niro by touching his feet (traditional Indian greeting) when he was visiting Goa along with his daughter for the THiNK 2013 summit. He then followed it by kissing his knee while the 70-year-old sat in a chair.
Not quite sure about De Niro’s reaction to the warm welcome, but we’re pretty sure Ranbir had a “moment.” After all, it’s not every day you meet the “Raging Bull” himself and everyone can relate to being starstruck, especially when running into a silver screen icon of De Niro’s caliber.

In something straight out of a 1940′s Hollywood film noir, Indian forensic experts are now saying that a reexamination of the recently deceased actress Jiah Khan‘s remains revealed signs of a struggle. Though news stories had not long ago painted the young thespian’s struggles with depression following a faltering Bollywood career as motives for a suicide, her mother struggled violently against these initial assertions by both the media and Indian authorities. After Jiah Khan’s body was found in her Juhu Beach apartment speculation ran rampant that her flailing acting career and troubles with boyfriend Suraj Pancholi had led her to hang herself. A suicide note (claiming Suraj had raped Jiah, impregnated her, and then forced her to have an abortion) had also been found and Indian police even went so far as to arrest boyfriend Suraj for allegedly abetting the suicide.
Suraj was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing and the scandal died down as yet another cautionary tale of a young ingenue who came to Bollywood with dreams of glamor only to taker her life when those dreams seemed to be faltering, but Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan would have none of it. After initially questioning the authenticity of the alleged suicide note, she then personally hired an independent forensic expert to reexamine the evidence, and has now publicly pointed the finger at Suraj Pancholi in the press. Rabia finally received the recognition of an Indian court that asked the authorities to reexamine the forensic evidence. Incidentally, Suraj is the famous scion of an acting family that includes his former actor father Aditya Pancholi and mother Zarina Wahab. He’s was scheduled to take his own turn on film by starring in the Salman Khan produced remake of Subhash Ghai‘s 1983 hit film ‘Hero‘ early next year, but those plans may have to be delayed.
Suraj and his family seemingly went on the offensive after he was cleared following Jiah’s June 3 suicide investigation. Suraj event went on to claim in interviews that Jiah was depressed at the time of her suicide, had tried to commit suicide previously (an attempt that Suraj says he stopped), that Jiah was abused by her ex-boyfriends, and had been raped by an older man when she was fourteen. His mother then went on the record as saying that Jiah Khan was too much in love with her son, suggesting an unhealthy connection for the deceased Jiah and Suraj.
Through it all, Rabia Khan would have none of it and her efforts may finally bear fruit. The independent forensic expert Rabia had hired, esteemed Dr. R K Sharma of the infamous Noida murder case, found that Jiah had 300 ml’s of alcohol in her stomach at the time of her death, meaning she was most probably incapacitated. This level of intoxication would make it very difficult for Jiah to hang herself as the Juhu Beach forensic experts had initially concluded. Dr. Sharma further suggested that an able bodied person would, however, be able to hang Jiah. He further found human tissue under Jiah’s fingernails and blood in Jiah’s nail clippings, suggesting a struggle right before her alleged suicide. Indian authorities at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) at Kalina, Mumbai agreed with Dr. Sharma’s conclusion in a recent report regarding the pre-death struggle assertions and will most probably order an exhumation of Jiah’s body for further examination according to sources.
No word on who the alleged murderer may be, but some sources have said authorities suspect someone “very close to Jiah” may have committed what is seemingly turning from a suicide to a homicide investigation. We here at World SannaKhan will have more news of this increasingly bizarre case as it is unfolds.

Priyanka Chopra is continuing her push to take over America as she appeared in an interview for a segment of ‘Nightline’. The CAA-repped actress (the first Bollywood star to ever be represented by mega-agency American agency CAA…) first began the push with her foray into the music world. She had collaborations with Pitbull on the single ‘Exotic’, previously released the single ‘In My City’ with will.i.am, and has even appeared on the opener for Thursday Night Football.
Priyanka has recently been announced as the face of Guess over the holidays and is getting ready to drop yet another single on American audiences. But is it working? She tells the British interviewer during the segment that America is the ‘Land of Dreams’ and a multicultural melting pot so making it in America is still a possibility.
In an interesting segment surely meant to demonstrate her ‘All-American Appeal’, Indian Chopra squeals with delight when she says American burger chain Jack in the Box and is then shown with a burger in hand. Has her play for American appeal gone too far? Will she alienate her Indian and international followers with this grab for American popularity? It remains to be seen, but her handlers are certainly pushing her crossover appeal pretty hard.
If you want to see exactly what Priyanka has to say regarding her American push, the ‘Nightline’ segment can be seen here.
